Conergy expands Canadian operations with new subsidiary in Ontario

2007/06/20

With a dealer network of over 100 solar specialists the company has completed Canada's largest commercial building-integrated photovoltaic installation.

Today Conergy announced the opening of its Ontario office to serve the growing solar market in the province. Combined with the announcement last February of the majority takeover of ETI SOLAR Energy Technologies Inc., with headquarters in Edmonton, Alberta, the new Ontario office builds a broad Canadian presence for Conergy's operations.

Through the Mississauga, Ontario office, Conergy is in an ideal position to address Ontario's expanding renewable energy demand. The new office will serve Ontario's solar market at a critical time, as the provincial government implements the first feed-in tariff in North America in twenty years. Since November 2006, Ontario's provincial Standard Offer Program has been receiving applications that assure a fix price for solar electricity systems under 10 megawatts. The program guarantees 42 cents (Canadian) per kilowatt hour for up to 20 years, provides a financial incentive to homeowners, communities and businesses, and encourages the deployment of renewable energy projects.

"With the current excellent conditions for solar electricity in the Ontario region, it is important for us to be close to our customers, offering our proven renewable energy technology and service expertise," said Steve Wiebe, former president and founder of ETI SOLAR and now President of Conergy Inc. Edmonton. "With the new office, we will be prepared for leadership in the Canadian renewable energy market."

Steve Wiebe and his team specialize in the design, marketing and distribution of photovoltaic systems. Together with their established customer base of over 100 dealers, they provide high-end solar solutions for private and commercial usage as well as for built-in systems for the RV market. One of their most outstanding projects includes Canada's largest commercial building-integrated photovoltaic installation at the University of Calgary, connected to the grid in 2006. Building integrated photovoltaic technology (BIPV) integrates the solar module aesthetically into the building's façade and has become a promising form of renewable energy for the future. It is complementary to modern architecture because it produces electricity while providing weather protection and shading elements for the building.

The Canadian market for photovoltaic systems has been growing at an average rate of 25 percent over the last 10 years to its current size of around five megawatts. After just three months operating in the Canadian market and thanks to the integration of the ETI SOLAR business, Conergy has become one of the leading solar companies with a market share of over 10 percent. The new office in Mississauga, Ontario will provide renewable energy solutions including solar electricity, solar hot water, solar heating and small-wind power to commercial and residential buildings, remote homes and cottage dwellings.
